There’s been a lot of publicity and hype surrounding 5G lately, and it’s now coming to a head with talk of the release of 5G data. But is it all it’s cracked up to be? Here’s a guide from us on the pros and cons:

Time

There are still a lot of roadblocks that need to be cleared before 5G will be available for use in homes and businesses. 4G took a very long time to implement. So while there’s talk of 5G being released this year, how likely is that? UK Telecoms providers still haven’t fully rolled out 4G to be covered in all areas of the UK. So how long will it take for 5G to be rolled out? When mobile companies eventually invest in 5G, there will need to be a 5G antenna on every part of our streets, which again will take time. Therefore, we think it’s reasonably unlikely that there will be any real changes in 2021. 

Practicality and Use

How much will 5G improve working from home life? Will it make a significant difference to the way we operate? Our IT services company isn’t convinced. For businesses working remotely or in the office, the majority of people will rely on cabled broadband from BT or Virgin Media and then WiFi in the home to work. So for a lot of people, 5G may not impact their working life. Although, on the other hand, since 5G provides faster internet connection, this may be useful to people with slow Internet connections! How often have you had to switch over to your Mobile data because your internet connection cut out? Or for people businesses looking to cut costs and use their personal hotspot to connect to the internet, this may be useful to them. 

Speed

The desire for access to quick internet has always been popular. This is especially true during the pandemic with more people relying on technology to stay connected. But how different will 5G actually be to 4G? And is there a need for increased speed? Who actually needs to use Facebook faster anyway? We’re betting that 5G will drain more battery life and use more of the data in your plan than 4G. So is it actually worth it? Time will tell.
