Why has WhatsApp changed?
Why has WhatsApp changed?
Whatsapp for the majority of people, is used on a daily basis. It’s just second nature now. An easy way to send messages, videos and photos to your friends and family, all while not paying anything extra. The ideal situation you would think. But is it as perfect as we believe? The whatsapp we once knew is no longer the same. The app created in 2009 looks nothing like the Facebook owned app that today’s society sees once you pull away the facade of security. Don’t believe us? Take a look.
Data Sharing
Due to the recent changes in the terms and conditions of Whatsapp, many users have switched over to similar platforms like Signal and Telegram. Data sharing with Facebook was something you could previously opt out of. But the recent changes have meant this isn’t the case for people outside of Europe. A Facebook spokesperson has assured its EU and UK users that it doesn’t share our data with Facebook for the purpose of improving its products or advertisements. However, the new changes to the privacy policy now mean that our data can be shared with other Facebook companies moving forwards.
Message Encryption
What can Facebook and Whatsapp really see? Are your messages completely private? Whatsapp has recently given a statement regarding this. They assured its users that any messages or phone calls you have are entirely private. They are not recorded or accessed by Whatsapp or Facebook. They claimed to never weaken the security of end-to-end encryption.
Facebook’s privacy policy
How many times have you read the entirety of the privacy policy? We can almost guarantee it’s never. It is common knowledge that everyone will click that they have read the T&Cs when in actual fact, they haven’t. That is simply because we don’t have time. It’s so long that the policy is almost unreadable. As the vast majority of us aren’t lawyers, we don’t know what we are agreeing to when we tick the yes button here. Facebook has been greatly criticised over the length of the policy and have had to provide clarification on it several times, but how safe are we really?
