Over the last decade, there have been many significant advances in the technological industry. One advancement is the improvement of Electric travel. Many are predicting that this is the future of travel, but is it? With the emergence of more and more low emission zones, increased tax regulations and the more significant environmental impacts we are all experiencing, we believe, yes, it is only a matter of time. 

 

Why now? 

We aren’t doing enough to reduce the impact we have on the environment, with devastating effects. One area that can drive down carbon emissions is changing the vehicles we use. The benefits of electric vehicles can be seen by all. Electric vehicles are becoming more and more popular, and we are seeing them more often on our roads. What’s stopping everyone from using them straight away?

The two main answers;  Vehicle cost and charging infrastructure. Range is no longer an issue, with many vehicles capable of 300 miles between charges. There are also already more charging stations than petrol stations across the UK. . Yes, EVs are more expensive to buy, but the running costs are far lower and offset the purchase costs significantly. The cost of electric vehicles is reducing quickly, with most vehicle companies previously focused on their premium brands which are always more expensive. More economical vehicles are coming, so watch this space! 

 

Environmental Impact

Despite reservations regarding building emissions and batteries, there is no doubt that electric vehicles are better for the environment. How do we know this? Lifetime emissions for an electric vehicle are on average 70% lower than a standard vehicle. The UK has been at the forefront of the “green vehicle revolution” since 2008. We are taking leaps forward to reducing the effect our traffic has on the environment year by year. The phase-out of petrol and diesel vehicles has now been brought forward to 2030, meaning vehicle manufacturers are all working to produce an affordable solution to the electric vehicle future. 

 

Ease Of Use 

Electric vehicles are now very similar to petrol or diesel vehicles in looks and usage, and some may say, more fun to drive!! It is a common misconception that they take hours to charge, only for them to travel a few miles. This was the case twenty years ago, but technologies are producing more efficient vehicles each year. Electric vehicles have significantly less maintenance as well. Once you go EV, we bet you will not go back!

 

Charging Times 

Just like a mobile phone, you can charge your vehicle from home. No need to spend money on petrol! The overall cost is dramatically lower in the long run due, especially with off-peak tariffs such as Octopus Go (Split £100 with us if you sign up with this link!). Public charging infrastructure is also a hot topic, with many saying the electricity grid can’t cope and that not everyone can charge at home. Yes, the grid can manage, and grid capacity will increase as demand increases.

Not everyone will be able to charge at home (where it is cheapest and most convenient, just plug in when you arrive at home). Still, at the rate of development of battery and charger technology, we will see charging hubs (like petrol stations) that will be able to fully charge your vehicle in a few minutes. The UK’s first Electric Forecourt opened in December 2020, with many more being planned and built.
